The child's personal name must be chosen by the parents at birth or reported to any administrative unit no later than 30 days after the child's birth.

It is registered in the central register together with the registration of the child’s birth. The registration is done by the administrative unit in the municipality of the child’s birth.

The administrative unit may refuse the registration of your child’s name if it does not conform to certain restrictions. The Personal Name Act stipulates that the registration of a name may be refused if the name you have chosen, does not correspond to legal requirements and could harm the interests of the child.

If the parents cannot agree on the child's personal name within 30 days after birth, the centre for social work assists them in making a consensual decision. If they still cannot agree, the final decision is taken by a court in a non-contentious procedure on application of the parents.
